- Thabo stated that one of actors biggest concerns is that they will not be paid
- The concern heightened after Uzalo staff were not paid
- Even though not all all actors work for the SABC, the industry is a constant rocky road no matter the production company
It’s a constant worry and according to Thabo Mkhabela from Skeem Saam, it’s a reality that actors are always concerned that they will not receive a salary at the end of the month. Thabo spoke out on this topic after the soapie Uzalo has stopped production due to money issues.
It was on Monday that it was announced by production house Stained Glass that the series, Uzalo, would be put on hold until end of August.
This after cast and crew did not receive their salaries. The hold-up is due to the production house awaiting monies owed to them by the SABC. All are keeping fingers crossed the situation will be resolved by the end August.
Briefly.co.za learnt that Leshole openly said that although he is fortunate enough not to ever have been in the situation where he has not received a salary, but the concern is always there working in the entertainment industry.
He said that the thought of not been paid is not constantly on his mind, but he is aware of certain happenings within the SABC of which the employees have no control over.
Even though they do not work at the SABC, actors are still apprehensive when it comes to being paid.
He went on to say that with the economy the way it is today, everyone just wants to take care of their families and to be able to provide as the cost of living today is at an all-time high.
Leshole was one of the fortunate ones to join the team on Skeem Saam while he was still attending school. This particular industry is so difficult to break into and allow those trying to get a break.
He said that he has worked with actors that today do not have work as shows tend to use the same actors over and over again. It is a huge frustration for actors.
