Mbalentle Sipengane is just 24 years old, but she's already proving that age and gender are no barriers to farming.

She took over the running of her family's poultry farm, Monzai Eggs, in 2016, City Press reports. Since then, the young farmer has more than doubled its turnover.

The farm is located in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg. It has an annual output of over 31,800 trays of eggs and annual turnover of R1.4million, Briefly.co.za learned.

In the process, Mbalentle has created jobs for 10 workers. Her parents have been leasing the farm from the government since 2004.

Mbalentle holds an agriculture degree from Potchefstroom Agricultural College. In an interview, she said she initially wanted to be a fashion designer.

However, when she saw her parents struggling to overcome the numerous hurdles facing black farmers, she decided to join the family business. Her decision took many by surprise:

I always have to explain myself to some suppliers, as they do not believe that at my age I can run a farm.

Mbalentle credits her success to her parents' mentorship as well as her siblings' help in the day-to-day running of the farm.
