Semenya and Manyonga do South Africa proud with wins at Diamond League

- Caster Semenya crushed her opponents in the 800m finals at the Zurich Diamond League event

- Semenya took an early lead and never looked like being challenged, she won by more than 2.5 seconds

- Luvo Manyonga won the long jump event beating out fellow South African Rushwahl Samaai

Caster Semenya and Luvo Manyonga have both taken victories in their respective events at the Zurich round of the Diamond League competition. Semenya cruised to victory in the 800m while Manyonga fended off a challenge from fellow South African Rushwahl Samaai in the long jump.

Semenya was in imperious form and crushed her opponents with an emphatic victory in the women’s 800m final. Semenya took an early lead which she never gave up and won by more than 2.5 seconds.

Semenya was at her brilliant best during the event and her long easy strides saw her putting more and more distance between herself and the chasing pack with virtually every step.

Briefly.co.za gathered that Semenya finished with a time of 1:55.27 her closest rival turned out to be Ajee Wilson who finished a distant second with a time of 1:57.86. Third was taken by Natoya Goule who clocked a time of 1:58.49.

The win means Semenya has not been beaten in the 800m event in three years. It also gave Semenya her third straight Diamond League Trophy.

Sport24.com reported that Semenya will bank around R700 000 in prize money.

Meanwhile, South Africans Luvo Manyonga and Rushwahl Samaai battled it out for top honours in the long jump at the same event.

Manyonga was pushed to the limit by Samaai. The pair battled for the lead until the final jump of the competition. Manyonga’s final jump of 8.36 meters was enough to secure the win.
