In August, the country protested the abuse against women, but it appears toxic relationships are a two way street.
As Women's month came to an end, Twitter parody account Man's Not Barry Roux shared a story about a woman who murdered her husband.
He simply captioned the post, "Men are not safe."
The post sparked a response from South Africans who shared their own real testimonies of toxic relationships.
So, Briefly.co.za decided to gather four of the best real-life testimonies of people who got out of a relationship for the best.
Social media user @MabhebezaEC__69 wrote: "Moved out of my house back in Aprik as I saw things were becoming violent. I miss my children, but I'd rather them have both parents than none. There were times I literally slept with one eye open. Truth be told, as things were one of us was either going 6ft under or jail....."
He added, "...the decision I told to move out was the best one I took, although I miss my family. For the first time I talk about this, and it feels good yazi. People never allow yourself to be miserable in a relationship, & if u feel danger then leave no matter what."
