An explosion shook the Macassar community in more ways than one; not only could people near the explosion physically feel the impact, 8 lives were lost during the sudden event.
The reason for the explosion that happened on Monday, 3 August, is still unknown. Experts and the police worked into the nightly hours to determine the cause of the explosion but it is still unclear.
South Africa's acting president, David Mabuza, ordered that the investigations be given the highest priority.
Thami Ngwenya, spokesperson for the acting president, said Mabuza not only expressed his deepest sadness at the loss of 8 lives, he wished the families of the deceased well.
TimesLIVE reported the explosion was intense enough to destroy the entire building as well as the surrounding walls.
Lawrencia Samuels lost her husband, Nico, to the explosion, as reported by EWN. She remembers that he loved his job as supervisor at Denel.
Sadly, four children are now left without a father and with no clear indication of the cause of their dad's death. The families of those who passed away in the explosion are anxiously waiting for the outcome of the investigation.
