A 29-year-old beautiful lady from Johannesburg, Gauteng, says her earlier HIV denial nearly claimed her life.

As Briefly.co.za recently reported, Lebogang Motsumi is an HIV activist and inspirational speaker. She contracted the virus at the age of 17 from a celebrity who has since passed away.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Lebogang said she didn't think she could have the virus even after the celebrity told her that he was positive.

She explained:

I thought I couldn’t have it because I was young, beautiful and chubby. I associated it with people from poor communities and thought they looked skinny with their hair falling out.

Three years later, she discovered she was indeed HIV positive and started taking medication.

However, Lebogang joined a church whose pastor claimed he could cure the condition. As a result, she stopped taking ARVs and ended up being hospitalised for six months.

After almost losing her life, she decided to dedicate her life to HIV activism. She's now on a mission to teach the youth about the importance of living positively:

I came up with the name uBabes we HIV to bring attention to the topic and break the stigma around the disease.
