- Designer Janak Parekh gifted Mangosuthu Buthelezi a R90k suit for his 90th birthday
- Buthelezi wore it on his birthday but has now returned it
- A heartbroken Janak said he believes Buthelezi gave it back because of the price tag
Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has returned the R90,000 suit he received as a gift for his 90th birthday recently.
Daily Sun reports that this has left Janak Parekh, the suit's designer and the man who made the gift, heartbroken.
Buthelezi wore the suit on his 90th birthday celebrations. Janak believes Buthelezi returned the suit because of its hefty price tag.
61-year-old Janak said:
I apologise for any inconvenience caused. It was unintentional. I think Dr Buthelezi returned it because of the price tag. I shouldn’t have let slip how much it cost, but the price tag was misinterpreted.
He hoped that this "mistake" would not affect his longstanding relationship with the IFP leader.
IFP Chief Whip Narend Singh could not be drawn into commenting on the matter, Briefly.co.za learned.
Parekh said he designed the 4.5kg suit in South Africa but five artisans made it in India. They took two months to complete it.
The high profile designer insisted that he will not put it up for sale, opting instead to return it to India.
