- As of Tuesday, the EFF has a new Member of Parliament
- Yoliswa Yako was sworn in as an MP by the deputy speaker of the National Assembly
- Yako’s appointment has sent twitter into something of a tizzy
Yoliswa Yako was sworn in as the latest Member of Parliament (MP) to represent the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Tuesday morning. Yako was officially inducted by the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Lechesa Tsenoli.
Yako’s appointment has sent twitter into something of a tizzy and had tongues on the social media platform wagging. She has been described as a bulldog by some and an attacking midfielder by others.
Tweeps seemed to lick their lips at the prospect of Yako duelling with Tsenoli when they come face to face in the national assembly.
Briefly.co.za gathered that Yako replaces Vuyokazi Kethabahle who resigned as an MP. Yako hails from the Nelson Mandela Bay metro where she served as a councillor. She has also served as a provincial spokesperson for the EFF.
Yako wasted little time in getting to work. Shortly after she was sworn in she attended a sitting in the National Assembly regarding the plight of student’s involved in the #FeesMustFall protests.
Yako lived up to her reputation when she attacked the Democratic Alliance (DA) and African National Congress (ANC) accusing the parties of trying to destroy the futures of students who had taken part in the protest marches.
Meanwhile, some Twitter users questioned why the EFF was seemingly going through an endless stream of MPs in recent time’s especially considering the limited amount of seats which the party holds in Parliament.
Congratulatory messages also came in at a steady rate throughout the day.
