Dignitaries from across the world are in Ghana to pay their last respect to the late former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Busumuru Annan who will be buried in Accra today, September 13, 2018.

The burial, which will be a private one by the family at the Military Cemetery in Accra will be preceded by a state burial service to be held at the Accra International Conference Centre, Briefly.co.za gathered.

Dignitaries from Ghana and around the world will mourn the former diplomat. According to Daily Graphic, an estimated 1,500 dignitaries, including heads of state and the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, are in Ghana for the burial service of Mr Kofi Annan.

Some of the heads of state attending the funeral are President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, George Weah of Liberia, Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire, Hage Geingob of Namibia and Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger.

Others include the Angolan Vice-President, Bornito de Sousa; the former Queen of the Netherlands, Princess Beatrix; the Deputy Chief of the African Union Commission, Mr Kwesi Quartey; a former Prime Minister of Kenya, Mr Raila Odinga, the National Assembly Speaker of Kenya, Justin Muturi; and South Korea’s former Ambassador to the United States, Choi Young, who is expected to lead a delegation from his country.

From the United States (US), the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control, Andrea L. Thompson, is leading his country’s delegation to the funeral.

Since Monday, Ghanaians and many from far and near have been trooping the AICC where the remains was lying in state to pay their last respect to the late diplomat.

Kofi Annan died at age 80 on August 18, 2018, at the Swiss capital, Bern, after a short illness.
