A community had to work together to help a baby, who was abandoned in a plastic bag by its mother in Galeshewe, Kimberley.
South Africans came together to help buy nappies and clothing for little Siphosethu, which means "Our Gift" in Xhosa.
IOL reported Siphosethu was found on Friday morning after residents of Galeshewe heard a noise resembling a crying baby coming from a plastic bag.
People gathered around the baby, which drew the attention of Vusi Modisane, who works crime-fighting group Wanya Tsotsi.
Modisane said he was on his way to work when he spotted four people who drew his attention to the plastic bag.
Upon inspection, Modisane realised the plastic bag contained a baby. Briefly.co.za learned Modisane did not expect the bag too closely, but he immediately phoned the relevant people to ensure the child received the necessary care.
Little Siphosethu was taken to the hospital, where she received the necessary care and reports has since indicated she is doing well.
The Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit has opened a case of child abandonment, and the mom of the baby is yet to be found.
