- Kaizer Chiefs recorded their second premier league victory on Tuesday night
- The Glamour Boys beat Giovanni Solinas’ former Free State Stars side 2-0 at Goble Park
- Solinas made dramatic changes to his side with only four players from the match against Cape Town City starting the game
A rampant and new-look Kaizer Chiefs recorded their second premier league win of the 2018/19 season on Tuesday night. The Glamour Boys delivered a resounding and convincing performance to beat Giovanni Solinas’ former Free State Stars side 2-0.
Solinas made dramatic changes to the team which thumped Cape Town City 4-1 on Saturday. Only four players from Saturday’s match were included in Tuesday’s starting line-up. The team’s second win has propelled them to third on the PSL log.
The match started slowly with both sides probing but not launching a serious attack. That changed halfway through the first half when Gustavo Paez and Philani Zulu scored within nine minutes of each other.
Briefly.co.za gathered that after the match Solinas seemed to have slightly mixed emotions about the result. Solinas said he was pleased with how Kaizer Chiefs played and happy with the results but he felt some pity for Free State Stars because it is his former team.
Citizen.co.za reported that the second half of the match was a tense affair which didn’t present many chances for either of the teams. Free State Stars came close to scoring in the 83rd minute but Itumeleng Khune once again proved his class in the goalkeeping department with a magnificent save.
Solinas said it was part of his strategy to rotate his players and to give everyone in the squad a chance to play. He said it was important for the team to keep refreshing itself.
The coach said he was incredibly pleased that the team he selected performed as well as it did on the night. Solinas said the playing squad would be rested while the rest of the team continued with training ahead of their next match at home against AmaZulu.
Solinas said the team still needed to improve and would have to work hard in order to achieve the results which the fans demand.
Kaizer Chiefs supporters will be hoping the team’s second successive win is the start of a turnaround from its nightmare start to the season.
Solinas issued a warning to all the other teams in the league after their win over Cape Town by saying the real Kaizer Chiefs had arrived and were only going to get better.
Solinas was coming under severe pressure from supporters and the media after his team failed to win a single league game in the first five matches of the season. The recent results will bolster his claim that given enough time with the club the results would follow.
