- The Spurs boss was offended when asked whether he should have started Trippier and Alderweireld
- He said a manager had every right to decide their first 11 and believed his team outdid Inter
- Pochettino said the result was cruel and his team deserved to win
Tottenham Hotspur began their Champions League campaign on the wrong foot loosing 2-1 to Inter Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday night, September 18.
Christian Eriksen inspired Spurs to clinch an early lead with a brilliant goal and the English side went into the half-time break confidently ahead by 1-0.
However, it was not long before Inter retaliated with Mauro Icardi's sensational long-range volley in the 85th minute and Matia's Vecino stealing victory away in the last minutes of stoppage time.
According to Guardian, Pochettino lost his calm when asked whether he should have opted to start the game with key defenders Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld.
"You disrespect the players that tonight showed better qualities than the opponent," the Spurs manager said.
"When My decision is to play with 11, you must respect my decision because I am the manager. It is so painful to hear when some people are not here and you judge in that way," he said.
Pochettino was visibly disgruntled at his players loosing the game and felt they were the better team of the night.
"It's so cruel," he said. "The team deserved much more and I think that was our best performance since the start of the season. The only way back to winning games is to play the way we played," the Spurs coach said.
The Spaniard held that sometimes, football was just about fortune and having things go the right way.
"It is not about learning and working on the training ground on set pieces - you need luck, too, and the right decision at the right moment," Pochettino said.
"We have quality and i started to see good signs the team is coming back. We showed great personality. We controlled Inter Milan in the San Siro, a difficult place. we were unlucky not to keep the result we deserved.
Tottenham travel to Falmer Satidium on Saturday September 22, to face Brighton in the Premier League.
