Pretoria-based Offering Tlaka is a talented trampolinist who wants to see more black kids joining the sport.
Speaking to Beautiful News, Tlaka said he was introduced to trampolining at the age of 12. Before that, he had thought it wasn't a sport for a black boy like him.
Everything changed once he learned it. He said, "This is more than just jumping around on a trampoline. It has been my ticket to empowerment and freedom.”
Tlaka became so good at trampolining that he represented South Africa at the 2014 World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships in the US.
He also flew the country's flag his at the 2017 Championships in Bulgaria. He subsequently started the Klim-Gim Trampoline Club in Pretoria.
It is here that Tlaka hopes to open up the sport to more black kids. He said:
Very few black kids have a chance to become involved with the sport because they are not exposed to it, and it’s also financially demanding. I believe in passing on the skills that I’ve learned through my years of experience.
He teaches the kids how to be excellent gymnasts and how to bounce back from personal setbacks.
