Payola is a phrase used to explain musicians paying money, or bribing, their way to a radio playlist.

In a recent interview, Blaklez said he was totally disgusted when he was asked to pay payola while trying to get a sinlge on radio.

He told TshisaLIVE that he's never done it and never will, adding he didn't want to ellaborate too much on the issue.

Briefly.co.za learned that the muso found himself in such a situation recently, because of the album he currently has out and a single he's trying to promote.

Apparently the person they submitted the single to explained the payola situation to him.

"The person that we got as our point person to submit, he came to us and said, 'Well here's the situation at that particular radio station."

It's believed payola is a very subtle for of getting your music out there. Those who ask for payola don't want any evidence, in the form of paperwork, pointing back at them.

What that essentially means is that someone like Blaklez cannot name the person who approached him for payola, because it could constitute a defemation lawsuit.

Blaklez said he worked hard enough to be where he is, adding he would not compromise his character or himself by paying to be on radio.

According to Blaklez, if he did pay payola, he would not be believing in himself and what he's done. He also mentioned it would be unfair to artists who don't have the money to do so.

The musician said he's worked hard to prove himself and paying payola would undo all the effort he already put into his career.

"It has been difficult enough for me so there's no use and no need in me turning back and changing my colours."
