When East London police officers pulled over a black Golf GTI last week, they were on a mission to save a passenger of a different, more giant kind.
Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala, spokesperson for the East London police station, said her officers received some information that a man was driving around town with an endangered snake in his car's boot on Monday.
Warrant Officer Pieter Swanepoel‚ an alert K9 unit officer who was off duty at the time, was quick to spot the wanted car. He then followed it in his personal car.
According to the Daily Dispatch, the Golf was eventually pulled over.
Briefly.co.za gathered that a rare red tail boa constrictor python was subsequently discovered inside a kit bag‚ next to a large sub-woofer, in the suspects' boot.
The driver and his passenger were then arrested.
Mqala said the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act. 10 of 2004 states it is illegal to carry out a restricted quantity involving a specimen of a listed invasive species without a permit.
A large audience gathered around the suspects' car. When the snake was removed from the bag, it stirred up a huge commotion.
