A new statue of Nelson Mandela was recently unveiled at the UN General Assembly in New York, and South Africans are not impressed. Many are saying the statue looks more like Robert de Niro than the Madiba they knew and loved.
President Ramaphosa was present at the unveiling of the life-sized statue of peace icon Nelson Mandela on South Africa's Heritage Day.
Ramaphosa said the statue serves as a reminder of SA's dedication to contributing to a better world for everyone, as reported on earlier by Briefly.co.za.
However, the statue didn't get such a warm welcome from South Africans. In fact, many took to social media to express their disappointment in how the statue looks.
It seems the main issue was with the statue's hair - which is said to not look like Madiba's at all.
Columnist Tom Eaton gave his 2 cents too, saying the statue looks like a fusion of Robert de Niro, Samuel L Jackson and Nelson Mandela.
@pinkykhoabane - Looking at this Mandela Statue, it's no wonder Mama Tshepo Ramaphosa kept look at it up-and-down in disbelief.
@KeithCoventryCT - Its def not Madiba … who is it? Think Ramaphosa took the wrong statue… hope they didn't take our deaf signer who performed at Madiba's funeral as well
