Footage of Herman Mashaba was shared on social media, which showed the mayor claiming churches were wreaking havoc on the city.

The clip was shared on Twitter by social media user Angela Bolowana, along with the caption: "Mayor Herman Mashaba says churches are wrecking havock in the City of Joburg. He says they are worse than tarvens #sabcnews."

Mashaba's statements sparked quite the reaction on social media, so, Briefly.co.za decided to gather six responses from tweeps.

Social media user @given_mashatola wrote, "@HermanMashaba @RhemaSA u have every power and rights shut down every satanic practices church and even God agrees with you fully. But don't touch the true churches of the living God which lead people to transformation of their bad characters. u will find yourself fighting GOD."

Another tweep, @MlamliTshaka, wrote: "Actually people were debating about this in Phillipi community meeting. In townships you hardly walk 2 minutes then another church. Inside its only 5 or less with keyboard singing."
Themba Joseph Dladla, who goes by the Twitter handle @TJDdladla, commented: "It’s true all open space that is reserved for parks around Soshanguve has been occupied by churches!"
