In Zimbabwe, homosexuality is still illegal, but a Straight Zimbabwean man posted a video on Facebook showing his town how to deal with gays.
A Zimbabwean high school teacher came out as gay to parents and students. This after a local newspaper was about to publish an article outing the teacher.
As a result, Paul Teasdale posted the video.
The teacher, Neal Hovelmeier, teaches at St John’s College in Harare. He and the principal, Cavaliere Corrado Trinci, wrote a letter to the pupils’ parents after they announced he’s gay in assembly.
According to a report by Good Things Guy, Hovelmeier decided to take the massive step to stop homophobia. Hovelmeier said he was motivated to do so when former pupils, who have come out since leaving school, told him how they were not tolerated, intimidated and teased while at the school.
Hovelmeier, a form 6 teacher, caused quite the frenzy nationwide and on social media. Some say the school shouldn’t have disclosed his sexual orientation at school, Briefly.co.za learned.
Teasdale, however, wanted to send a message to the world following Hovelmeier’s bravery:
“I see one of these fruit loops sitting in front of me and I’m going to show you how a good Zimbabwean man handles and how best we can set an example to our children, to our boys in this town and this country…”
Tasha Quinn commented: “Sitting at my desk this morning in Joburg drinking my coffee and I saw this come up and saw you are also a Zimbo and reading the headline ... I was like "Oh dear God ... " but then I watched the video and you Sir are friggin awesome! Us fruit loops like hugs btw”
Cordelia Joseph wrote: “God bless this man. If only there were more with your mindset Paul. People must be free to live the way they choose. In SA transgenders fear for their lives and its not fair.
The more we behave like Paul we leave a better world for our children and grandchildren. God bless you.”
