Fact check: Were 90 SA politicians really killed since 2016 as NYT states?

Division and corruption is like a snake eating its way through the African National Congress. What started as a political party that inspired millions now leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of South Africans.

Since 2016, about 90 political killings has shaken the ruling party to its core. What's worse is that these killings weren't done by opposing parties or rebellious factions - it came from within the ANC itself.

The New York Times reports that KwaZulu-Natal is considered the most dangerous province in South Africa, where 80 ANC officials were killed between 2011 and 2017.

ANC members and politicians in this province live in fear and walk around armed. A KZN mayor even said that life was better during the apartheid era.

It was better before we attained democracy, because we knew the enemy — that the enemy was the regime, the unjust regime. Now, you don’t know who is the enemy.

Mary de Haas - an expert on political killings - says politicians have become like the mafia. Democracy has run out the door.

These killings aren't happening because of disagreements on what politicians want for the country.

No, these killings are driven by selfish corruption. Anyone who dares point out corrupt dealings should watch his or her back.

31 politicians were assassinated in 2016, 24 of them in KZN. In 2017, about 40 politicians were 'taken out'.

One of these assassinated politicians, Sindiso Magaqa, was shot about 6 times for trying to expose corruption within the ANC. Another whistle-blower, Thabiso Zulu, has gone into hiding. He doesn't sleep in the same place twice and spends his life looking over his shoulder.

Two weeks ago, the National Freedom Party asked President Ramaphosa yet again to declare a state of emergency in KZN, as reported on by Briefly.co.za.
