- The pastor of a church in Hazyview has been arrested on a charge of rape
- The 28-year-old pastor allegedly raped a 15-year-old member of his church
- The police believe the teenager wasn't his first victim and hopes others victimised by the man will speak up as well
A 28-year-old pastor was arrested on Wednesday, 3 October, in Mpumalanga after allegedly raping a 15-year-old female member of his congregation.
The accused briefly appeared in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court where his case was postponed to 11 October for a bail application.
Brigadier Leonard Hlathi confirmed that an arrest was made on accusations of an incident that happened in August.
The man leads a church at Tshabalala near Hazyview.
TimesLIVE reported that the man contacted the girl on social media. He told her to visit his church so he could pray for her.
The girl went to the church, and he allegedly tried to rape her at this meeting. Then, the following week, he persuaded her to meet him at the church again. This time, allegedly, he succeeded in raping the teenager.
Briefly.co.za gathered that the man intimidated the girl into keeping quiet.
The police believe the girl is not the accused's first victim and have called on the congregation to come forward if they have any information on other victims, or have been victimised by the pastor.
