The cash-strapped Free State club have been struggling to pay salaries. Indeed, it was recently reported by Kickoff.com that players only recently started receiving salaries and that monies were still owed to them. The initial payments were made following a protest from players refusing to train. Amazingly, the extra challenges may well be fueling the players’ will to succeed as they find themselves 4th on the log. Winning their game in hand theoretically would place them at the top of the table. Coach Steve Komphela credits their strong performances to their resolute mindset.

"It's mindset, working more on how we see things, the mindset, the mindset. The mentality has to be different. To be honest, we could not be oblivious where you think everything is hunky-dory, no. In as much as you look at facts and you are stuck on the way things are, where is you focus? The most important thing is to compete” he said in the press conference following their clash with Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday. Komphela also praised the club’s fans and cited them as a key driver for the players. "The Celtic supporters, these guys are amazing, and that is another responsibility we have in terms of, 'Gentlemen, in as much as we have our own little challenges here and there, the bigger picture is these people must feel good'. Next up for Phunya Sele Sele will be Free State Stars in the derby on Saturday.
