-Maritzburg United and Cape Town City play out to goalless draw
-Citizens now 7 games without a win
-Maritzburg and City now 13th and 14th respectively
The Harry Gwala stadium saw Maritzburg United and Cape Town city play out to a goalless draw earlier this evening. Although City have recently enjoyed cup success, their league form has been of concern as they haven’t won any of their last 7 encounters.
Benni McCarthy, coach of the Citizens, alluded to fielding the same team as Saturday against Supersport United. That team performed admirably in the cup and were again in the ascendancy in the first half tonight.
The first real effort came from the boot of Gift Links as he curled a free kick wide in the 12th minute. However, City keeper, Peter Leeuwenburgh, was called into action to deny a powerful low drive from Yannick Zakri in the 23rd minute. It was then the turn of Thabo Nodada to test the Maritzburg shot-stopper, Richard Ofori.
There was a fairly uneventful passage of pay early in the second half until Siyanda Xulu came close to breaking the deadlock for United in the 63rd minute but his close range header sailed wide. Fadlu Davids, the United coach, brought on Belgian striker Andrea Fileccia in place of Zakri on the hour-mark. McCarthy then introduced the nippy Craig Martin and Surprise Ralani from the substitutes bench. Ralani fired a late effort wide and all efforts ended in vain as the contest remained scoreless.
United and City lie 13th and 14th in the table respectively and perhaps the log position is an indication of the quality the 2 mid-table teams lack.
