- Some even regret winning their fortunes in the first place
I Blew It, a new TV series on DSTV's Mzansi Wethu channel, features South Africans who suddenly became rich — and then proceeded to lose it all.
The show premiered on 7 October, Briefly.co.za gathered. One of those featured was Nonhlanhla, who was awarded R1million by the Road Accident Fund after a 2013 car accident.
Excited by the huge payout, Nonhlanhla promptly quit her job as a sales agent, which had earned her R3,000 a month.
Apart from renovating her grandma's house for R60,000 and buying a second-hand minibus taxi for R160,000, the new millionaire went on to spend her fortune unwisely.
She and her friends went on shopping and drinking sprees. They also had an unplanned vacation to Durban. She splurged huge amounts to renovate her boyfriend's car. They have since broken up.
Nonhlanhla now has less then R200,000 in her account. She said:
Last year was so rough. I thought I had everything, then I realised R1m is like R10,000, it's nothing. I regret getting the money.
Another ex-millionaire who lost it all is Thabo from the North West. He won R1.8million in the Lotto in 2008.
He spent R800,000 building his mother a house. Apart from that, however, he bought himself four cars and misspent the rest of his fortune.
In the end, the dad-of-four had to sell his cars and now lives with his mom. He expressed his regret:
I enjoyed it but now it's hard. Life is harder now because I know what it's like to have that kind of money.
