The news is filled with reports of drug busts, smuggling ring takedowns, cash-in-transit-heists and any number of other crimes which take place on a daily basis, but have you ever stopped to wonder about the exact numbers behind these headlines?

Briefly.co.za takes a look at some of the interesting and useful facts behind the headlines thanks to the release of the SAPS annual report for 2017/2018. TimesLive.co.za reported that these figures are for the reported period which ran from March 2017 to March 2018.

• The ratio for police officers to residents has dropped from one cop for every 369 people in 2016/17 to one for every 375 in 2017/18

• There are 1 146 police stations in the country. The SAPS has a total of 49 aircraft, 136 boats, 142 forklifts, 2 681 trailers, 1 040 motorbikes and 48 337 vehicles in its vast fleet.

• There were 1 610 782 arrests during the reporting period. 1 123 968 of those arrests were for what police classify as serious crimes. The arrest rate is down from 2016/17 when 1 626 628 arrests were made.

• The average response time country-wide to crimes in progress is a somewhat shocking 17 minutes 11 seconds. Response times for crimes which had already taken place was 20 minutes 42 seconds and surprisingly minor crimes such as loitering had a quicker response time of 18 minutes 47 seconds.

• Police confiscated 1.3 million litres of alcohol, 216-million kg of dagga, 77 444kg of cocaine, 546 500kg of heroin, 864 451 mandrax tablets and 392 945kg of crystal meth.

• South Africans love to protest, police recorded 10 853 peaceful or non-violent protests and another 3 540 protests with some sort of violent outburst or unrest.

• The SAPS held 33 558 roadblocks during the reported period and searched 6.048 million individual cars or vehicles.

• Salaries suck up most of the SAPS budget, 77.4% or just over three-quarters of the SAPS’ annual budget is spent on paying the salaries of 193 297official SAPS employees (not all employees are police officers).
