- SARS officials found Fayrooz Saleh with R9m in her luggage at OR Tambo airport
- She couldn't provide a satisfactory explanation for how she obtained the huge amount
- She appeared in court for failing to declare the money
Mystery surrounds the circumstances how 22-year-old student Fayrooz Saleh came upon R9million in US dollar currency.
SARS officials apprehended the Johannesburg-based young lady with the huge amount in her luggage at OR Tambo International Airport on 11 September, TimesLIVE reports.
She was traveling to Hong Kong and had failed to declare the cash, Briefly.co.za gathered. She was subsequently arraigned before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court.
Fayrooz reportedly pleaded guilty during her court appearance. However, she failed to explain how she got the money.
According to court papers, she admitted that she was not the owner of the cash. To whom the money belongs remains a mystery, however.
Should the court accept Fayrooz's guilty plea, she is likely to pay a fine three times the value of the cash she failed to declare. Alternatively, she could serve up to two years in prison.
In her Twitter bio, Fayrooz describes herself as an introvert. Her posts suggest that she enjoys listening to rap and hip hop.
