Many South Africans prayed for rain as the country battled the recent drought crisis. However, PSL supporters will be praying for more goals amidst the worst goal drought in 59 years.
Sport 24 reported on the goal drought relative to the passion of football fans. It is argued that goals are a key driving force in attracting followers to the beautiful game.
If the theory holds true, supporters would not be impressed with the current state of affairs. A meagre tally of only 127 goals have been scored this season.
The average goals per game amount to only 1,87 with Bidvest Wits the best of a low-scoring bunch.
A damning stat is that 50% of PSL clubs have an average of less than a goal per game. A number of factors should be considered when assessing the goal tally.
Improved defensive organization and better goalkeepers could easily lead to a goal reduction.
However, Briefly.co.za gathered that the general consensus is the finishing hasn’t been clinical enough due to mediocre temperament and technique.
The problem is magnified when one compares the PSL goal tally to some of the top European leagues.
The weighted average of the top European leagues come close to 3 goals per game. Incredibly, the NFD have an even lower goal average than the PSL with only 1,67 per game.
Do these stats justify PSL clubs scouting for marksmen abroad rather than domestically?
