Two homeless lovebirds in Cape Town have not allowed their homelessness to get in the way of their love for each other.
Nathaniel Booysen and Sophia Schalk had a colourful wedding to formalise their union on World Homeless Day (10 October), SowetanLIVE reports.
They tied the knot under the under the Culemborg Bridge, Briefly.co.za gathered. The City of Cape Town has designated the bridge a “safe space” for homeless people.
32-year-old Nathaniel has been living in the streets for 12 years, while 45-year-old Sophia for 10 years.
Nathaniel said he was nervous but very happy to finally marry the love of his life. Sophia added:
I am feeling very special. We chose this day because we are on the street and it is World Homeless Day.
The two have been living at the safe space since July this year along with 155 other homeless people. The City provides them clean water and ablution facilities‚ toiletries‚ blankets and health services.
The mayoral committee member responsible for social services, JP Smith, said the City's mission is to reintegrate as many homeless people as possible back into society.
