South Africa is famous for many reasons, including Nelson Mandela, its fabulous tourism destinations, and its interesting people.
However, most people might not know that South Africa lays claim to several international celebrities who have their roots here. Briefly.co.za highlights five of them.
1. Roger Federer
This tennis legend hardly needs introduction. He's currently ranked world number two and is a 20-time grand slam winner.
According to goodhousekeeping.co.za, Federer's dad is Swiss, but his mom is from Kempton Park, Gauteng. Her name is Lynette, and Federer has South African citizenship thanks to her.
2. Hugh Grant
As a world famous actor, Hugh Grant has long been a heartthrob for female fans across the world. The British actor's most memorable role was in the movie Notting Hill.
Grant's paternal great-grandfather was born and grew up in Cape Town.
3. Daniel Radcliffe
Who could ever forget Radcliffe's starring roles in the Harry Potter movie franchise? Not many, that's for sure.
Radcliffe may be from Britain, but his mom and maternal grandfather were both born in South Africa.
4. Sasha Pieterse
Sasha is the well-known star of Pretty Little Liars TV series. She was born in Johannesburg in 1996.
However, her parents moved to the US along with her when she was just three years old.
5. Dave Matthews
Dave is a co-founder of the popular US rock band Dave Matthews Band, better known as DBM. He's the band's lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist.
He was also born in Johannesburg. His family moved with him to the US when he was two years old.
