- Thabang Mabaso was initially told that his physique wasn't suitable for ballet
- Instead of dampening his ambitions, this criticism fuelled them
- He's now an accomplished ballet dancer and teacher keen on passing on his skills
A young ballet dancer had to overcome criticism about his physique to achieve success in the classical profession.
Growing up in Orange Farm township in Gauteng, all Thabang Mabaso wanted to be was a ballet dancer. However, a teacher once told him that he didn't have the desired physical attributes.
Instead of dampening his dreams, this criticism fuelled them. Through sheer determination, Thabang is now an accomplished ballet dancer and teacher.
Speaking in an interview with Beautiful News, Thabang said ballet has given him freedom through the expression of movement.
He is based at the Joburg Ballet Company, Briefly.co.za gathered. His Facebook profile reveals his passion for ballet through several photos of himself dancing.
Thabang is now keen to pass on his skills to the younger generation. He explained:
Ballet has allowed me to be myself, to be okay with being myself, and to put that out there to the world. Today, I feel closer to my purpose.
Now I can share what I've learnt with the next generation. Ballet teaches you confidence and courage. It teaches you to hold your head up high; to get up when you're down.
