Xolani Luvuno is an inspiration in more ways than one.
The human spirit and determination can be extremely positive driving forces.
They can be honed to aid us in recovering from setbacks but also to spur us on to greater things. Nowhere is this more evident that in the tale of Xolani Luvuno.
After facing a demoralising battle with bone marrow cancer, Luvuno faced amputation and he sadly lost his right leg.
To rub salt in the wound years later, his life became even more challenging as he succumbed to a nasty drug addiction. During the same time, he found himself homeless and trying to survive on the streets.
Fortunately for Luvuno, he crossed paths with Hein Venter, who took him in and became his running coach.
Incredibly, 2 years on from beating his drug addiction, he completed the Comrades marathon using crutches. The 34 year old achieved the history-making feat earlier this year.
At the time, news24 reported on Luvuno’s gratitude towards his coach when he said, “I owe everything to Hein. To me, he is my father, my coach and my everything. I had given up on life because it is difficult to get a job for someone with one leg and no education.”
The story doesn’t end there as Luvuno has now completed a 2nd marathon this year – the 42km Voet van Afrika race.
At this rate, we may soon see the remarkable South African competing at international marathons in the near future.
