Thulani Mtsweni has revealed that he took a lot of inspiration from the stories of the Marikana Massacre in 2012 where 44 people lost their lives.
The actor is currently playing Sibiya on ‘Isidingo’, who is a miner and is currently dealing with an ongoing dispute which eerily echoes the events of the massacre.
Thulani spent a lot of time researching the massacre in the hopes of doing the role justice.
While he knows that the show was not re-enacting the events at Marikana, but Thulani felt that they are very similar, so he wanted to make sure that he approached the scene in a sensitive manner.
Briefly.co.za learned that the actor did struggle to cope with some of the scenes mentally, but Thulani had developed a few techniques to help him get through it.
According to TimesLIVE, the actor is often stopped by fans on the street to discuss the current storyline, although their opinions on Sibiya are very divided.
Some of the show’s fans support Sibiya’s decision to fight back to protect his family, while others feel that violence will only make things worse than they already are.
