3 strikers that Chelsea can sign in winter to replace Alvaro Morata

At the start of last season, Chelsea were strongly linked with former striker Romelu Lukaku. He ended up at Old Trafford and the Blues opted for Alvaro Morata instead. A move that is yet to pay off.

With 3 goals from 9 games in the league this season, it’s fair to say Morata’s impact hasn’t been particularly inspiring.

His haul of 11 in 31 matches wasn’t much better last season either.

The club brought in Olivier Giroud in January and his hold-up play is exceptional but has rarely been a prolific scorer.

With Michy Batshuayi sent out on loan, there isn’t much back-up in attack.

Various reports have therefore indicated Chelsea will be looking to the transfer market in January to replace their misfiring forward. We profile 3 of the strongest candidates.

Mauro Icardi

Icardi has been 1 of the most consistent forwards in Europe with an average of over 20 goals per season for the last 5 campaigns.

The Inter Milan striker is yet to renew terms with the Serie A club so this could be the perfect time to pounce with a reduced offer.

Romelu Lukaku

Could the prodigal son finally return to Stamford Bridge?

Lukaku was never fully trusted by his former managers at Chelsea due to his age.

However, he was always fairly treated by the club – either loaned out to decent clubs to get playing time or sold to Everton when the player preferred to part ways.

Based on the amicable history and the big Belgian having developed his game, this could now be a time for a fairy-tale comeback.

Current Blues manager, Sarri, may well value a forward with Lukaku’s pace and physicality.

Tammy Abraham / Callum Hudson-Odoi

Probably the least exciting option for Blues supporters, but has its merits nonetheless.

Chelsea are renowned for recruiting fantastic youth talent and watching them bloom while on loan at lesser clubs.

The problem arises when those young players get frustrated with the lack of opportunity at Stamford Bridge and move to new pastures.

Following the premature exits of Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah and Romelu Lukaku, the Blues would be weary of going down the same road again.

They now possess 2 very young, but talented forwards in Abraham and Hudson-Odoi and may well look to blood at least 1 of them going forward.
