Tweeps inspired by tale of orphanage owner amidst the Rwandan genocide

Twitter user, @humansofny, shared a series of 7 tweets which highlighted the incredible story of the man who inherited an orphanage in Rwanda.

Damas was a young man when his father passed away with a dying wish that he would continue to run the orphanage in his absence.

Although he had other ambitions, he accepted the responsibility and essentially raised hundreds of children over time.

This all took place during the genocide in Rwanda in the 1990s.

Damas shares the dramatic story of their will to survive during those turbulent times.

He also reveals the role played by an American named Carl Wilkens, who assisted them with water and milk every week.

Tweeps were moved by the touching tale and many hailed Damas a hero.

One gets the sense of the desperation and fear they must have felt during those challenging times.
