A viral video shows the dramatic moment a minibus taxi driver crashed into an Engen garage in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, recently. The accident left two people injured.
Twitter user @SALTruckers shared the video on 3 November, Briefly.co.za gathered. Its post initially suggested that the driver of the taxi was drunk.
However, Michael Davids, the garage's manager, told Daily Voice that the driver wasn't drunk. He revealed that the taxi malfunctioned, causing it to accelerate unexpectedly.
The video shows customers walking around the store before the taxi barged through the entrance and knocked over the two customers.
The driver appeared dazed, and the rest of the people rushed to get out of the store as quickly as they could. Police and paramedics were subsequently called.
In an interview, Davids said:
From what we know, the driver was not drunk. He had filled up on the tanks and when he restarted his van, there was some sort of malfunction. The accelerator and the clutch were damaged and he just went flying through the shop.
A police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirmed that investigations into the accident are underway. No arrests have been made so far.
Davids said repairs to the damage have already begun. The store is not yet open for trading in the meantime.
