A chilling video captured the moment a Free State man was shot dead in cold blood in an apparent hijacking.
The broad-daylight shooting took place at the Commando shopping centre in Welkom on Saturday, TimesLIVE reports.
54-year-old Shai Mikia Mohapi was identified as the victim. He suffered five gunshot wounds, three in the chest and two in his left arm. (Warning: Graphic or sensitive images on video.)
CCTV footage shows the two men approaching Mohapi's car, a blue Volkswagen Polo, at the parking lot. One was walking with a limp.
One of them opened the car door, shot Mohapi five times, and pulled him out of the car. The men then drove off in the car, which was later found abandoned.
Mohapi passed away at the scene. Police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng said they have launched a manhunt for the men. The have also opened a case of murder and hijacking.
The brazen incident sparked outrage among South Africans on social media, Briefly.co.za learned. Many of them described it as a hit. Some even called for the death penalty to be re-introduced in South Africa.
