South Africans were left shook after the Deputy President's spokesperson said Mabuza was "not ill" despite being on sick leave.
On Sunday, Thami Ngwenya set the record straight after reports indicated David Mabuza flew to Russia to get medical treatment. South Africans wanted to know why he had to go to a foreign county for medical care and Ngwenya shed some light on the deputy president's trip to Russia.
However, the statement left South Africans even more confused than before because Ngwenya said Mabuza was "not ill", he was simply on sick leave.
"At no point did our statement say the deputy president is ill, but rather [it] says he is on sick leave. It would be mischievous to ask how ill is the deputy president when no such inference was made," he said.
The Twitter streets exploded with reactions from South Africans, who wanted to know how someone could be on sick leave while being perfectly healthy, Briefly.co.za gathered.
Social media user, @KingThesues, commented: "@MYANC @StephenGrootes My wife is on maternity leave. This doesn't mean she's pregnant. Just saying."
One tweep tried to explain why a healthy Mabuza was on sick leave, but tweeps did not buy his excuse.
