As a result of her chronic illnesses, her children reportedly abandoned her. They used all manner of excuses to avoid caring for her, including being busy at work. Irma said:

I used to call my children not to take care of me, but to greet them and not feel so alone.

However, luck was on Irma's side. One evening, she unthinkingly bought a lottery ticket while on her way home from a hospital visit.

To her astonishment, Irma won the jackpot. She thought of informing her children about her win, but decided to keep it a secret.

Irma was then able to get better medical assistance, Briefly.co.za gathered. She also went on vacations around the world and took up meditation. Her health improved significantly as a result.

Amazingly, her kids got wind of her lottery win and labelled her "selfish" for keeping it a secret from them.
