Cheslin Marsh has a hearing impediment due to the brutal attack on him and his friend, Hannah Cornelius. However, he was seen sporting a new hearing aid which enabled him to hear the Judge’s verdict clearly on Monday.
The hearing device was sponsored by an ear specialist based in Sea Point, Cape Town.
The 22-year-old was the key state witness and his testimony sealed the fates of Eben van Niekerk, Gerado Parsons and Vernon Witbooi as they were sentenced to 25 years for his attempted murder.
Marsh lived to fight another day but his friend, Hannah Cornelius, wasn’t as fortunate.
The pair were talking in Cornelius’ car when the 3 men forced their way in and drove off with them.
They offloaded Marsh at Bernadino Heights in Kraaifontein where he was beaten, stoned and left for dead.
His survival was labelled a miracle.
The trio drove off with Cornelius where she was raped and murdered. Her body was found just outside of Stellenbosch.
Marsh had to brave the witness stand as his attackers looked on in disdain.
His emotional testimony proved to be the hammer blow as the men were sentenced to multiple counts of life sentences.
He met Cornelius’ family for the first time while at the trial.
Her father, Willem, offered the young man words of encouragement and assured him the tragic events would not adversely affect his future.
