Viral video shows Soweto learner viciously assaulting teacher

A viral video captures the moment an enraged learner assaulted a teacher at a Soweto school recently.

The Star newspaper shared the video on its Twitter profile yesterday, Briefly.co.za gathered. The incident happened at Albertina Sisulu Special School on 7 November.

The footage shows the unnamed learner pursuing a teacher armed with what appears to be a brick. He hurled the brick at the teacher, forcing the latter to duck.

The teacher continued to run away from the learner as other female teachers tried to prevent further assault. According to The Star, the learner is heard saying:

I have been patient with him for a long time, today he will s**t himself. I''m tired of Sammy. He's been ill-treating me for a long time. He might as well beat me up.

The female teachers urged someone to call the police. Several men eventually managed to restrain the boy.

Steve Mabona, Gauteng's education spokesperson, explained that the school caters for the mentally challenged.

He added that the teacher was treated for minor injuries. The teacher had tried to discipline the learner for noisemaking, sparking the confrontation. Mabona said:

The learner is still allowed at school and due to the nature of his behavioural disability, cannot be suspended. We are facilitating a diversion programme for the learner to address his behavioural challenges.
