The much anticipated announcement of the winners of the 3rd Annual Royalty Soapie Awards, have been made.

The glamorous event took place last night in Gauteng’s City of Ekurhuleni at Emperors Palace, reported the Daily Sun. A bit of a change, as for the past two years, the awards were hosted by the City of Durban, in Durban.

The awards were created by the incredible actress and businesswoman Winnie Ntshaba. The first awards were held back in 2014. It allows for recognition to be given to those who work hard and ooze with excellence, in the world of Soapies.

PAY ATTENTION: Save mobile data with FreeBasics: Briefly is now available on the app. learnt that the awards host an incredible eighteen categories. Seven categories covered creative and technical aspects while the rest recognised achievements in acting.

Seventeen of the awards are controlled by a panel of judges who make the decision as to who will receive the award.

The seventeenth category is left up to Mzansi to decide on. The public are given the opportunity to name the Most Popular Soapie of the Year. This was scooped by the wildly loved soapie, Skeem Saam.

The eighteenth category, Lifetime Achievement in the South African Soap Opera Industry, is awarded by Royalty Soapie Awards EXCO, to the one who has made a lasting impact and invaluable contribution, throughout his or her career, to the soapie (small screen) industry.

The big winners of the night were: Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya with a whopping total of four awards, and then came Binnelanders and Isidingo, who both took a rather impressive total of three awards each.

Every participating soapie walked away with something though. The awards are very fair and pride themselves on uplifting the industry by recognising effort and contribution, as well as the cream of the crop.

The Royalty Soapie Awards also announced their foundation, which has been created to guide and support young people’s career aspirations in the performing arts and creative industry. The Royalty Soapie Foundation is funded by the National Lotteries Commission Lotto Funded.
