- A mother was photographed begging at a traffic light at the Klipriviersberg off-ramp, with her small child by her side
- However, the image sparked a debate on social media on whether or not it was child abuse
- Some said the woman endangered her child's life while others felt she was doing all she could to provide for her family
With unemployment at an all time high and poverty crippling many of South Africans, people do whatever it takes to provide for their families.
However, sometimes their methods are not approved by others. While some people turn to crime, one mother turned to begging.
The unidentified woman took to a traffic light at the Klipriviersberg off-ramp to ask motorist passing by for money.
However, the lady received backlash after it was revealed her baby was with her at the traffic light, despite it being a really hot day. Some even dubbed her actions as child abuse.
"The child had no form of protection and I’m certain was in danger of heatstroke. I called Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and reported it," Julie Maule wrote in the Alberton Record.
Briefly.co.za gathered South Africans were left divided over the image. Some agreed the woman's actions could have been seen as some sort of child abuse.
Paul Fletcher wrote: "Lock her up. It is child abuse! Nothing gets done about this, they are everywhere."
Elmarie Irving added: "Please whether u give her money to go home they will still come back. How many parents actually begs on the side of the road without their babies. Instead of sitting there get up and go look for work. Why must the poor children always suffer. What type of childhood does this little child have. None! If u cant look after yourself then dont go and make babies."
Sunet Du Toit commented: "Yes it bothers me alot. I keep my children out of the hot sun and these poor children are exposed to the sun and traffic... Cant imagine how a todler can sit still the whole day in one spot and in this heat also."
However, some people felt the woman was trying to provide for her family and she could not have just left the child home alone.
Stella Claudia Crosti wrote: "They look like hey are in the shade, where else must she take her baby?"
