A woman based in Durban shared an intriguing Facebook post urging her fellow Durbanites to stop giving money to beggars.
We've all experienced seeing adults and children begging for money at traffic intersections.
While many feel moved to give, one woman has taken a stand and urged the public to resist the urge to do so.
Katie Friedman shared a Facebook post in the Everything Musgrave group where she highlighted her reasons not to give donations to beggars.
Essentially, her reasoning is that begging is a demeaning practice and it prevents people from becoming self-reliant.
By giving in to their pleas, the general public is enabling this behaviour and sustaining its longevity.
Friedman therefore calls for the public to rather donate to an NGO, which is in a better position to help those in need.
Briefly.co.za gathered that many South Africans shared the same sentiments based on the responses to the post.
Some have even compared the practice to child slavery.
