A picture of a nurse taking a nap at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Gauteng, has sparked intense debate on social media.

Kefilwe Modika took the photo and shared it on her Facebook and Twitter profiles on 19 November, Briefly.co.za gathered. She accompanied it with the caption:

I have been at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for over 4hrs. The nurse is asleep and I was intimidated by the security guards for taking this picture. They refused to give me their names and were all not wearing name tags. @GautengHealth Ntate Aaron Motsoaledi, look at your kids.

The image went viral, picking up in excess of 1,400 retweets and 1,100 likes in the process. It divided opinion among Twitter and Facebook users.

Some expressed outrage at the nurse for being asleep on duty. However, others were more sympathetic because of the long hours they often work.

Many argued that workers at public hospitals often don't take their patients seriously.

However, others argued that the nurse could have been overworked and cautioned against jumping to conclusions.
