A matric girl is pregnant and three teachers have been suspended, pupils claim that one teacher has slept with several girls.

Authorities in the Education Department are investigating a favour-for-marks scandal following the suspension of the three teachers.

The teachers stand accuses of having had intercourse with a least 10 pupils at an Eastern Cape school. The teacher's name has not been revealed to protect the identity of the pupils.

One of the girls, pregnant with her accounting teacher’s child, has said that her uncle reported the matter to the provincial education department two weeks ago.

Allegedly the teacher has been having intercourse with the schoolgirls since at least June and nothing was done about the matter.

“She conducted a home pregnancy test and informed the teacher who then promised to give her money for an abortion,” the uncle told City Press.

The 19-year-old revealed in a recorded conversation with her uncle details about the relationship between herself and the teacher and names other teachers guilty of the same behaviour.

The uncle said that the teacher had allegedly promised the girl good marks as well as money in exchange for intimate favours.

The family member has reported the teacher to school management and the MEC of Educations office.

A senior teacher at the school, Lindelwa Mdemka, has confirmed that the girl had reported the shocking events to her principal. Mdemka also revealed that the girl was suicidal and had begged the school not to reveal her situation to her parents.

“She is shocked. And we cannot deal with the case while the pupil is writing exams and threatening to take her own life if we inform the parents. We decided we would discuss it after the exams because we feared the girl might stop coming to school or worse, kill herself, because she is afraid,” Mdemka said.

City Press has reported that three other matriculants have confirmed that intercourse with teachers was a common issue facing school goers.

One of the students revealed that “You would find situations where one teacher would be sleeping with two or three girls who are not only friends but even roommates,”

Another pupil said that the girls involved in similar situations would often come from other villages and rent a room nearby the school, making them easy targets to these predator teachers. A source stated that the girls got involved because they were “desperate to pass”.

“I also rent in the village. No one monitors us, so you find that these teachers go for those girls who stay by themselves,” she said.

Chairperson for the school’s governing body, Asakhe Mase, said: “They know the law ( says) that you cannot sleep with schoolgirls… We expected better from our teachers. It looks like these three teachers were doing this thing in collaboration.” She went on to say that: “It seems as though it was something they were discussing and were playing these girls and taking advantage of them,”

Malibongwe Mtima, Provincial Education Spokesperson, has confirmed that the suspended teachers have prompted an investigation team to have a closer look at the situation.

“The allegations that the pupils and teachers sleep together in exchange for marks will be tested by the investigating team,” he said. had reported earlier that a teacher from northern KZN stands accused of getting five students from different schools pregnant. He promised the families of the pupils that he would pay lobola and marry them but instead of making good on these promises he disappeared. Read more:
