Probe launched into EFF’s alleged R1bn kickbacks from Jozi contract

- Herman Mashaba, mayor of Johannesburg, will be investigating rumours of the Economic Freedom Fighters receiving kickbacks from the city's fleet contract

- This comes after social media rumours claim the EFF scored illegally

- Mashaba says anyone found guilty by the investigation will be punished harshly

Johannesburg's mayor, Herman Mashaba, will be investigating rumours of irregular kickbacks received by the EFF.

According to these rumours, the EFF was on the receiving end of kickbacks from Johannesburg's R1 billion fleet contract.

The Citizen reports Mashaba said that if any wrongdoing is found, the harshest action will be taken against guilty parties.

Amabhungane took to social media, threatening to expose details about the tender and the EFF's involvement.

The City of Johannesburg released a statement saying the accusations are very serious. Mashaba is taking them in a serious light.

I reject any claims that the multi-party government is complicit in an alleged act of wrongdoing, having demonstrated our track record in investigating and acting without fear or favour.

I would like to assure the residents of our city that any wrongdoing, arising from this investigation, will be acted upon, without fear or favour. We will do so openly and transparently and in a manner which will demonstrate that efforts to stop the rampant corruption the city takes cognisance of politics.

Briefly.co.za learned that Malema responded to the accusation by saying he is glad it is being investigated.
