A 29-year-old doctor was recently named the top medical officer at Pholosong Hospital in Tsakane, Gauteng.
Dr Nontuthuko Khumalo was honoured for her dedication and brilliance at the hospital's excellence awards held on Tuesday, Sowetan reports.
She works in the hospital's biggest unit that has 300 beds. On average, she sees up to 30 patients per day, Briefly.co.za gathered.
In an interview, Khumalo said she has a strong passion for helping people. She added:
In medicine there is an element of humanity. It is not an easy route to making money. You have to deal with people at their most vulnerable moments, because being sick reminds people of their mortality.
Khumalo however pointed out a number of challenges medical practitioners in the public sector face. These include long working hours and limited resources.
Nevertheless, she expressed happiness that their efforts are recognised through excellence awards.
She qualified as a doctor in 2013 and is definitely a huge inspiration for young women in the country.
