A young entrepreneur went from being a car salesman to being owner of a successful fashion design company.
Simphiwe Mbangi is the founder of Bundu Hide, Sowetan reports. His company designs and manufactures laptop bags and other accessories. It mostly uses denim and leather.
His entrepreneurial journey started in 2016 when he noticed that there were hardly any laptop bags by local designers being sold in major stores.
Armed with knowledge of this gap in the market, Simphiwe bought his first industrial machine in the same year.
A tailor friend of his then took him on a two-day crash course on the fundamentals of tailoring. He also learned more by watching online videos. Before long, he was making authentic South African bags.
Simphiwe then took the bold step of resigning from his job as a car salesman to focus on his business, Briefly.co.za gathered.
However, he suffered a setback in 2017 when he had to spend six months away from the business to recover from an accident.
A determined Simphiwe nevertheless overcame that setback. His products are now available online and via social media. He said:
What makes Bundu Hide unique is the process behind the design. It is functional and I use unconventional materials. I’m not reinventing the wheel but I am improving upon it.
