On 3rd December, the prestigious Ballon d’Or winner will be crowned. Briefly.co.za lists the top 10 in the running based on form and performance for the year.
The Ballon d’Or is the prize every top footballer hopes to win 1 day – the title of the best footballer in the world.
Only the best of the best have ever won the award, with the last 10 being dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, there’s an added buzz this year with many holding the view that their monopoly could finally be broken.
10. Eden Hazard
The Belgian captain just makes the cut at number 10.
He started the season like a house on fire but his output has dropped slightly over the past month.
His last 6 matches have yielded no goals and only 1 assist.
Unfortunately not the impressive final month he would have been hoping for.
9. Mohammed Salah
The Egyptian king was a favourite earlier in the year in the middle of his goal blitz last season.
However, his form hasn’t reached the same levels this term and has slowly dropped the down ranking ever since.
Another factor not in his favour is that Egypt had a relatively poor World Cup.
8. Raheem Sterling
Sterling wasn’t even a contender a few weeks back but has earned his top 10 place courtesy of some brilliant displays of late.
During his last 6 matches, the Manchester City winger has notched 4 goals and 4 assists.
7. Luka Modric
This seemed to be Modric’s year after a heroic World Cup run by Croatia.
Modric was pivotal to Croatia’s success at the tournament.
Prior to that, he won another UEFA Champions League medal with Real Madrid.
Regrettably, his chances have taken a huge knock with the form of Real Madrid this season.
The Galacticos have struggled this term without Cristiano Ronaldo and Modric hasn’t covered himself in glory either.
The Brazilian is widely touted to be the long-term successor to Messi and Ronaldo.
However, the PSG forward is not quite there yet.
He has scored 3 in his last 4 matches so a strong finish in the end.
5. Kylian Mbappe
The world’s most talented teenager makes it into our top 5.
Hard to believe that he’s still only 19, Mbappe has already taken the world by storm.
He is a World Cup winner already and crucial to PSG’s success.
However, his goals have dried up slightly over the past month or so – just 1 goal in his last 5.
4. Harry Kane
Kane climbs up the rankings to number thanks to his stellar form of late.
He’s scored 5 from his last 6 appearances and his form has coincided with that of Tottenham rising up the table.
We can’t forget that he had another excellent domestic season last term as he finished with the 2nd most goals.
3. Antoine Griezmann
The Frenchman just makes it into the top 3 with some blistering form of late.
Being a World Cup winner is a real feather in the cap and his recent haul of 3 goals plus 3 assists in the last 6 gives him an added edge.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo
Just when some would disregard Ronaldo, the superstar bounces back in style.
Having won the UCL with Madrid, he automatically became a strong candidate.
Following a sluggish start at Juventus this season, he has come back strong by being the fastest man to reach 10 goals for the club.
His current form has been really strong with 3 goals and 2 assists in his last 5.
1. Lionel Messi
Messi and Ronaldo seemingly have a positive impact on each other’s performance.
When one succeeds, the other raises his game and vice versa.
Messi wasn’t a favourite to win the award as Barcelona failed to win the UCL and Argentina had a torrid World Cup.
However, Barcelona still won the domestic league, the Copa del Rey and the Supercope de Espana.
On a personal level, Messi won the European Golden Shoe as well.
Although he’s struggled with injury slightly, Messi still scored 3 goals and 2 assists from 3 matches.
