Rival football clubs don’t easily sell their best players to each other. However, these 4 footballers have made the switch between the 2 English Premier League giants, Arsenal and Manchester United.
Although Arsenal and Manchester United have had a slight dip in recent years, there was a period when the 2 clubs enjoyed the biggest rivalry in the league.
Briefly.co.za looks at 4 star players to have represented both clubs.
Robin Van Persie
The Dutch striker joined Arsenal from Feyenoord in 2004.
His time at Arsenal brought many goals but was also plagued with injury.
After 7 years at the Gunners, eyebrows were raised when Van Persie was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011.
His impressive overall goal tally at Old Trafford of 58 goals in 105 matches is part of the reason why United won the premier league in 2012/2013.
Welbeck racked up numerous titles while at Old Trafford under Sir Alex.
However, he often failed to make the starting line-up due to United’s excellent attacking options and due to his own injury record.
He eventually signed for Arsenal in 2014 and has scored 32 goals in 126 appearances.
Sadly, his move to the Emirates hasn’t improved his luck with injuries.
The French left-back spent 9 seasons at Old Trafford and amassed 6 major titles with the club.
His versatility made him a useful squad option, which perhaps explains his longevity.
Silvestre made the switch to the Gunners in 2008 but didn’t make much of an impact there.
He only mustered 3 goals and 43 appearances for the London-based side.
Many Manchester United fans were excited when news broke of the Armenian’s arrival.
Purchased from Borussia Dortmund in 2016, he has failed to match expectations.
Jose Mourinho utilised Mkhitaryan as a winger and a midfielder but he struggled to maintain any sort of consistency.
He moved to the Emirates in 2017 as part of a swap deal and seems to have adjusted well.
