Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has ruffled many feathers lately, sparking intense criticism from some quarters.
Among those who have come out to lambast Malema is well-known South African historian Robin Binckes, Briefly.co.za learned.
In a hard-hitting open letter to Malema published on News24, Binckes dismisses him as a fraud and "a con."
Binckes began his letter by calling Malema "a foreigner:"
You are a foreigner, Mr Malema. Not by birth but by thought and vitriol. You do not belong here but rather on the scrapheaps of history with the Hitlers, Idi Amins, Pol Pots and Mugabes.
You are a foreigner to the decent people of this country, black, white, coloured and Indian.
He said the EFF leader is hoodwinking poor people into believing he's one of them while he lives in "the home of a self-acknowledged white capitalist crook, tax evader and cigarette smuggler."
The historian tore into Malema for sending his son to a private school while his followers struggle to pay fees for their kids in public schools.
He also cited Malema and EFF's alleged involvement in the VBS scandal, adding:
You are a con, Mr Malema, and the tragedy is that there are people who fall for your vile and populace drivel.
Binckes criticised Malema for using inflammatory words such as "war," saying that he has no idea of the devastation wars cause on civilians.
He said South Africa belongs to all — white, black, Indian, coloured — and that Malema's "hate and racism" has no place in it. Binckes concluded:
You don't belong here, Mr Malema. South Africans are proud of our country – you make us ashamed.
